NASA Glenn Amateur Radio Club (NA8SA)
NA8SA is the amateur radio call sign of the amateur radio (also known as ham radio) club at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Glenn Research Center is the northernmost of the NASA centers and is adjacent to and west of the Cleveland, Ohio Hopkins International Airport.
Our Mission
The NA8SA amateur radio club provides public service and emergency communications at NASA’s Glenn Research Center and participates in outreach events for ham radio enthusiasts and the community to expand their knowledge of radio communications.

NA8SA Station specifications
HF Station
Main Site
- KLM-34A 4 element triband (20/15/10) beam at the top of a 135-foot tower.
- At 50 feet is the apex of an inverted Vee wire antenna.
- On the ground is a Cushcraft multiband vertical.
Operating station
- ICOM-735 transceiver, driving a matching SP-20 speaker unit.
- Voice and CW input with ICOM desk microphone and an MFJ-484C electronic keyer.
- TOKYO Hy-Power HC-2000 antenna tuner and antenna switch.
- Logging computers.
- Powered by Astron RS-35M DC power supply.
VHF Station
- VHF antennas located on various other points on the tower, and some test antennas including a 4-bay system.
- Two repeaters (NA8SA/R) on 147.195/147.795 MHz and 444.100/449.100 MHz. These carry signal up to 50 miles from the Cushcraft dual-band vertical centered over the top of the HF beam at over 140 feet.
Visitor’s Center Station – no longer in operation
The NASA Glenn Visitor’s Center Satellite station is no longer in operation. All of the Visitor’s Center station equipment is now located in the NA8SA station.
HF Equipment
- IC-761 HF transceiver driving a Cushcraft multiband HF vertical at a height of 40 feet.
- The VHF equipment
- IC-275A 2-meter all-mode transceiver
- IC-475A 70-cm all-mode transceiver
- Two steered yagi beams (KLM 14420C 2-meter crossed yagi beam and a 440-22CX 70 cm crossed yagi beam)
- Yaesu 5600 AZ/EL rotor and rotor controller.
The antennas are mounted atop a 70-foot crank up tower. Inside the station, computers operate the satellite tracking with INSTATRAK and GRAFTRAK software. During periods when satellites were not available, packet radio operations, including APRS are used.
