Transonic Truss Braced WingThe Transonic Truss-Braced Wing aircraft, or TTBW, is a concept aircraft with extra-long, thin wings stabilized by diagonal struts. This design has potential to be much more fuel efficient than a traditional airliner due to a shape that would create less drag, resulting in less fuel burned. The icing branch is assessing the impact that icing has on the TTBW, which has features that have not been extensively studied in icing conditions. Lack of similarity to previous designs for vehicles of this class will require greater dependence on simulation tools to enable certification with minimal reliance on flight testing. This research, a collaboration between NASA and Boeing, looks to generate data using the IRT to help validate icing prediction tools such as GlennICE to help ensure the vehicle can be safely certified and meet its fuel reduction goals. This activity is also investigating potential materials that are both durable and icephobic for use in Ice Protection Systems.
